[First thing’s first: cleaning up. The blood swirls down the drain of the too-big shower in this too-big guest bathroom, and Makima closes her eyes, water sluicing over her form. This is nice, she thinks, plainly.
And when she’s done there, she dries off and dresses in the clothes provided for her. It’s a simple number, a nice blouse and a dark maxi skirt, less formal than her previous outfit — but her previous outfit could definitely use some help, now.
Generous as it is, should she consider it strange that Warren happens to have women’s clothes on hand? And even those that happen to fit her? It’s like something out of a thriller, or a slasher film building bodeful suspense.
She lets him know that once she’s dressed and presentable, meeting him in the living room. Her hair’s fully down, since she undid the braid to shower, and she won’t bother to plait it together again until it dries completely.]
You know. When a man just happens to have a girl’s size in clothes laying around in the movies, it’s never a good sign.
[She’s grinning, though, clearly in a pleasant mood post-shower.]
[As promised, she's let loose into the city the next day, free to gather up whatever else she might need for a new life in a new world. Given that she already has a fully furnished home in which to stay (read: Warren's house), there's really not much on the list. Clothes make up the most of it; casual outfits, formal outfits, outfits for every occasion and just about every kind of weather. And despite her freedom to buy as she pleases, Makima doesn't splurge. She picks out what she likes, but really no more than what she needs. The clothes aren't the exciting part, anyhow.
The dogs are!
Later in the afternoon, Makima returns from this extended shopping trip with several large bags hung at the crook of her shoulder. But more importantly, on a pair of three leashes are three dogs, which walk in front of her, tails in the air and tongues lolling (well, for the most part, one seems particularly grumpy), simply excited to be here!]
Warren!
[She calls out, smiling. WHERE YOU AT, MEET HER NEW DOGS]
[ In the days that follow, Warren works to help get Makima settled. And by “works”, he mostly calls on some contacts to establish her with an identity and furnish her with a phone. He also brings in another wizard – an Illusionist with whom Warren works a lot – to take care of the matter of her eyes. She’ll have her choice of mundane color for outward appearances, but the glamour is such that she can dismiss and reestablish it on her own. Warren is of the mind that her golden gaze would be something intimidating and otherworldly, too useful for her to lose it altogether.
In any case, the point here is that Warren outsources a lot. He has people for anything and everything. But there are instances where he prefers to do the legwork himself, such as delving into the matter of summoning a demon.
As far as rituals go, there are plenty to choose from, and while Warren usually doesn’t mind spilling some blood to get what he wants, he would much rather keep Makima’s existence a secret until she gets a bit more power back. So, no sacrifices this time. The next best thing was to find a place where the barrier between this plane of existence and hell was exceptionally weak and to perform a bloodless version of a summoning there. And places like that, thanks to the way they make even mundane people feel uneasy and impart distinct feelings of dread and being watched, are very usually abandoned.
In this case, there’s an old, hollowed out house in one of the more rural areas of New York that fits the bill perfectly. Ironically, it was once built as a movie set, but the influence of hell there made filming an alleged nightmare. Whatever movie it was supposed to have produced never came to be, and it remains a point of curiosity for urban explorers and collectors of lost media alike. Neither group stays to look around long, though. Hellmouth and all.
It’s almost too perfect, considering Makima’s love of film. The irony alone makes it ideal, and Warren seems to be radiating amusement already (in that subtle way of his) when he calls her into his library to lay it out for her. ]
