psl; [the healing process]

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ELLE GRAYSON is generally a normal one, with enough variety sprinkled in throughout the week to prevent it from becoming a deadly dull routine. She lives in a flat in London, a charming little one bedroom and two bath, not particularly large, but cozy. It’s a strange fusion of modern and old fashioned, a dichotomy that reflects her own personality quite well.
Every morning, she wakes up and makes a cup of strong coffee. (Black, no sugar.) Her cat, a grey, long-haired, grumpy looking thing, lazes on her bed for longer than she does, only trotting out when he’s ready to be fed. His name is Paladin Leeroy. Sometimes she just calls him Lee.
When coffee and breakfast are a thing of the past, Elle usually hears chirping on her balcony, a structure small but laden with potted plants. She will open the doors, and sometimes, if she’s in a particularly energized mood, will announce, “Your Queen has arrived! Court will now be held,” and the little sparrows will chirp at her, and line up in a row. She’ll feed them birdseed, or bread, if she’s run out. Later, Leeroy will bound out, but she always tells him to leave the birds alone until they’re done eating. He listens. They always fly away before he gets a chance to do any real harm.
Lately, she’s been working part-time at an advertising agency, writing and tweaking copy that slides across her desk. It isn’t the most fulfilling job, but it pays the bills, and that’s what matters. Her real work is her own writing; freelancing for various websites, and poking and prodding at the idea for a book, slowly trying to force life into the narrative. Sometimes inspiration strikes her, and she sits and writes for hours at a time, until her eyes begin to strain, and she has to stop. Other times, she grows tired and can’t seem to string words together at all, and her word document looks a bit like this:
ugh ugh you suck
That always gets deleted at the end, of course.
Crammed in the corner of the living area is an upright piano, white and well-used. Sheet music sits scattered on its stand, and an acoustic guitar rests on the floor next to it. There’s a television, of course, a flat-screen that looks larger than it actually is in her apartment. Connected to it is a Playstation 2, a blu ray player, and little else. On the shelves above, there are books — so many books. Mostly horror and old classics; copies of Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice look particularly worn.
The shelf next to it is stocked with board games. Tabletop and family ones, alike. One in particular is even out of its spot, instead spread out on the little glass coffee table. It looks as if a campaign hasn’t been started yet, though someone’s been flipping through the manual quite recently. Maybe quite frequently.
Her bedroom is small, but the bed is large and roomy. There are pictures of friends and family on the bookshelves in here, and a few on her nightstand. Beyond that, she keeps this part of the flat a little messier than the rest.
GENERALLY, SHE LIVES A RELATIVELY NORMAL LIFE, quiet and cozy. Sometimes living by herself is a bit lonely, and the time difference means that she cannot call her mom and step-dad any time she likes just to hear their voices. But like all things, these emotions pass like any other. Perhaps the only real oddity in her life are the strange surprises she sometimes finds on her balcony. There were a family of raccoons once. A possum. A falcon, who looked lost and confused when she opened the door, turning its head at her, blinking. There were even rats, but they only sniffed the air in her direction, and did little else.
Elle Grayson is just a normal 26 year-old, with a magnetism or two that might be considered abnormal. Perhaps that’s the extent of the oddities in her life. Perhaps this is all she could ever really wish for.
Perhaps she’ll be proven wrong, sooner rather than later.

He's in the city. He sees a window. No people inside.
Glass shatters and a large crow, the size of a big dog destroys a window and sticks a landing onto the sofa. It has flown a long way and it's exhausted. It didn't care who lived here, it didn't care if humans came in and tried to beat him away. He just wanted to lie down.]
no subject
And then there's a loud crash coming from the living area of her flat. That wakes her up.
She startles, gasping, sitting up in bed, her hair in her face. Oh god, what was that? Her heart races, adrenaline already beginning to pump in her veins. Did someone just break her window? Is she going to get robbed?
She gingerly gets out of bed, dressed in colorful fox-print pajamas. She looks around for a weapon to defend herself with, and... well. That vase there will have to do. Grabbing it, she makes her way to the door and quietly... quietly peaks out.
Elle doesn't see anything, but there's broken glass on the floor. No other movement. She frowns.]
Hello...? [She calls out, vase held up, ready to swing if need be. From this angle, she hasn't noticed the giant crow on her couch just yet.]
no subject
He thinks this to himself because he knows it. Somehow. Where was it? Who was it? His memory is blurred and hazy. He can't really think. He doesn't want to. He wants to sleep.
There's a tired squawk from the couch and a rustling movement of feathers and uneven breathing. Bird breathing even.]

And then it comes flooding back. The crow. The man. The man-crow.
She sits up immediately, eying her bedroom door, hair strewn across her face at awkward angles. Leeroy, sleeping at the edge of her bed, meows at her, as if saying don't bother.
Still, she gets up, dressed in her pajamas of the morning before, and crosses her room to open her door. She steps out into her living area, brow furrowed.]
...Corvus? Are you awake?
[That's weird. She doesn't see him.]
no subject
The cat, Leeroy. Its presence was more preferable compared to his form as a bird or as a man. Corvus hadn't changed into a different form for a long time, but felines, he isn't unfamiliar with. Humans tended to show some sympathy for cats in comparison to birds. So throughout the night he draws from his memory and experience on how to become a cat. And he's successful.
The black cat's tail waves back and forth as it lays on its stomach, eyes closed. His ears twitch every now and then and even more when he is alerted to Elle's voice. He opens his eyes and with some difficulty gets on his hind legs to let Elle see him.
He muses, of course that she won't figure it out right away because she's still having roadblocks to believing what she sees.]
no subject
And Corvus muses correctly; Elle doesn't put two and two together. In her mind, she only correlates Corvus with a man with black hair and dark eyes, or a large crow. She's had no reason to believe that a cat might also come into play.]
Hey there. [She starts, walking closer to the feline. She gazes out to her balcony window, where she had covered it up with duct tape and heavy cloth the night before, and drawn a thick curtain to keep the cold out. She furrows her brow, wondering how the black cat had gotten in; but then again, it's not like cats weren't clever creatures.
It's a tired-looking thing, she thinks. She tentatively reaches out to scratch at the top of his little cat head.] And who might you be?
[She looks around one more time for any sign of Corvus. Still nothing. Did he heal overnight and leave? She wouldn't put it past him, odd... person that he was.]

She needs to reorganize, it looks like. And dust a little up here too, she thinks, wrinkling her nose, pulling a book off the shelf.
(Below her, Leeroy saunters by, meowing. He's been grumpier than usual the past few days, and it's been more than obvious why. There's a stranger in their flat. It's shaped like a cat right now, but it's not a cat. It's not a man or a bird, either, and Leeroy knows it. He doesn't trust it. He still growls when it draws too near, but he's given up on hissing from across the room for now. It was a moot point. His human didn't seem to want to kick it out; dumb girl.)
Elle doesn't notice. She's too busy piling books into one arm (dressed in little more than a loose tshirt and cotton shorts, what she had slept in the night before; she seems to be less self-conscious about what she's wearing if Corvus is a cat rather than a man), while the other hand waves away a cobweb that had gotten stuck to one.]
Sometimes I wish I could just hire a maid...
[Of course, while she's doing so, her stack of books tilt and a few of the ones on top slide off and begin to clatter onto the floor; the loud noise startles Leeroy, and he bounds off in a blur.]
Crap, sorry Leeroy-! Watch out below? [She offers fruitlessly, then looks at the tiny mess she's made. The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe stares back up at her, skewed next to Emma, and a few others.]
no subject
No, not really. He was just sitting still when one of those books lands on him, pages open and despite being a cat, it seems he's not drawing upon the instincts of one at that specific moment, unlike Leeroy who rightfully zips off.
The book hangs on his head and he stares unblinkingly at Elle and then the ground before pawing it off, tail flicking with mild irritation.]
You don't have very good coordination.
no subject
She's about to apologize for dropping a book on his head, when he goes and says something as bluntly as that. She frowns, seeming slightly indignant, even as she's stepping off of her perch on the stool, remaining pile of books still in tow.]
Excuse you, but I have great coordination. [NO YOU DON'T...] You have to, if you can play an instru-
[She misjudges her step, busy trying to correct the black cat before her, and has at lurch forward to keep more books from falling on him.
She freezes, looking down at Corvus.]
...Don't you start.

Corvus's limbs don't feel as numb. The bruises, he can feel disappearing from his surface. His wound on his hind/thigh is also disappearing. The results were passable even though he did not have his healing factor from his heart. The past few nights became difficult to sleep through though, without his companions. As a cat or human, he fell asleep through pure exhaustion, equivalent to a blackout. Now... He's unsettled.
Elle told him he could stay with very few conditions on her end aside from the obvious ones. And Corvus kept them. He stayed as a cat, not making a mess, avoiding Leeroy's antagonism, and simply resting as is. A fat black lump. He seems so stationary at some hours, it's hard to tell if he moved around at all.
But one morning, there's the dark haired man sitting on the sofa, cross legged, staring at the wall unblinkingly. If Elle comes out, she'll hear his voice.]
I can use the clothes.
[At least he's not naked!? He's wearing a loose dark shirt and dark jeans. His feet remains bare.]

-and sees Corvus there on the couch, decidedly not a cat, but a man.]
Ah-! [He startles, nearly dropping her phone. Oh god. That she was not expecting.]
You scared me. How long have you been like that? [She shakes her head, then looks at him questioningly. At least he's dressed this time, but Elle still feels a spike of self-consciousness when he's like this, as opposed to a feline.]
You mean... you want to go shopping? [Today would be a nice day for it. ...The man definitely needs some shoes.]

ᴀᴜʟᴅ ʟᴀɴɢ sʏɴᴇ.
It’s a cake, white and pristine, with colorful frosting on the top; imagery of fireworks, and a fancily lettered “Happy New Year!” in script.
Then, she’s moving back into her kitchen, to dig around in her fridge. It’s not New Years’ Eve without some beer, or various other forms of alcohol.]
Hey, Cor… you’re gonna love what’s on the table right now. [She calls out, while she rifles through the fridge.]
Re: ᴀᴜʟᴅ ʟᴀɴɢ sʏɴᴇ.

Eʀʀᴀɴᴅ Qᴜᴇsᴛ
The alien give it another 15 minutes before he decides to make his switch to a human. He can't very well be neglectful of the person he's ended up staying with. Temporarily. Of course. She's been allowing him to recover, he in turn should make sure her health is in a satisfactory state.
Corvus is about to twist the doorknob to her room open before he stops. And thinks. For once.
Oh yeah.
One knock. Two knocks. Three.
That's how they do that.]
... Elle? Have you awakened?
no subject
At least, that's what it feels like, to her. The fact of the matter is that she's running a high fever, and her body has reacted with an annoying swath of chills running through her body.
Great, she thinks. Maybe it'll pass. I'll call off of work today, and then I'll sleep for just a little longer.
But... Corvus and Leeroy. They need to eat. I really should get up...
She feels terrible, but she has to do it. Frowning, she sits up, shaking a little. She's about to attempt to get out of bed when she hears a knock on her door, followed by Corvus' voice.]
Cor...? [Was he human?] Y-yeah, I'm... not feeling well, but I'm going to get you guys something to eat soon. Just... [Give her a minute.]

That's right. He's just about healed isn't he?
He was never uncomfortable as a crow. No, in fact during the night when Elle is asleep, he will switch back and forth between feline and crow, just so he can remember what it's like to have wings, to feel lighter than air, the need to fly. His wings weren't up to travel any long distances yet though and that's what troubles him. The longer he stays in the flat, the more Corvus feels fine with waking up with the same scenery in front of him. How he expects it even. But he has to leave someday. He said it himself. He will leave and Elle would not have to deal with him anymore.
(But it troubles him, a nagging feeling, a lingering one, something that he shouldn't be having a problem with because he is more alien than animal, more animal than human, he is inhuman and can't...)
One morning, he's out on the balcony, watching people and cars pass by. A bus happens to drive past the building and on it, there's an advertisement for a particular center of amusement that catches his eye...
The black cat saunters into the room and then onto the kitchen table, proposing a perhaps, not so peculiar question to Elle.]
Have you been in a planetarium before?
no subject
(She doesn't try to think about when he carried her to her bed the one time. She tells herself it was nothing, and that she definitely shouldn't dwell on it. It was merely Corvus being Corvus, as difficult to read as ever.
She's fine coming to that conclusion for now.)
Elle is straightening up her flat, keeping the living area organized to her usual standards. She's busy chastising Leeroy for knocking over a glass of water, and is cleaning it up with a towel when she hears Corvus speak to her from the kitchen table.]
A planetarium?
[At first, she thinks it's an odd question, before she realizes that his interest in that subject should be more than obvious.]
Yeah. In school, it seemed like we'd take a trip to our local planetarium every year. Our teachers expected us to have the names and shapes of the constellations memorized. [A beat, and she straightens to look at him, towel placed aside for now.] Why do you ask?

ᴛᴇʀʀɪᴛᴏʀɪᴀʟ ᴄʀᴇᴀᴛᴜʀᴇs.
It's what she told herself, anyway.
She has a day off of her part-time job, and has settled in front of her laptop, when the doorbell rings. Startled, she jumps a little, being unused to the noise; it's not like she gets visitors all that often, and she stares at the door for a little longer, before getting up and answering it tentatively. She blinks. It's her neighbor, the young man who lives on the bottom floor. They'd pass each other occasionally, and she'd give him a friendly smile and a little wave. But beyond that, she didn't know very much about him, and was at a loss as to why he could be standing at her door now.]
Oh... hi, Louis. [She greets him politely enough.] How's it going?
[She finds that the pleasantries run their normal course. The usual "I'm fine, how are you doing?", etc. However, it doesn't exactly answer her burning question of why he was at her door. It doesn't take long to find out.
She asks if there's anything she can do for him, and then the young man mutters out something along the lines of, Actually, I was just wondering if you were free today. Maybe grab a cup of coffee, see if, ah, maybe you'd be interested in lunch too? I know a place nearby that has the best-
Oh, but she's already stopped listening, because Elle knows where this is going. Louis isn't a bad guy -- she's sure that someday he'll make someone very happy -- but she's just... not interested. Not like that. In fact, for some reason that bothers her deep in her chest, going out with strangers is just... the least appealing thing to her right now.]
Oh, um. [She doesn't want to be rude, though. Her eyes flicker to her feet and then back up to her neighbor, chewing at her lower lip. She struggles to find amicable wording.] Sorry, but... [But... but, what?] I'm sorry, but I don't think my... boyfriend would like that.
[On the outside, she keeps a straight face. On the inside, she's cringing. Lying, really? She thought it'd be the easiest way to shoo him off without hurting his feelings. Of course, she's then surprised by Louis' response, which is similar to, Well. He doesn't have to know.
Wow. Her first impression of this man was very, very wrong.]
Er... [WORDS COME BACK. She should just say no, right? Just say no, Elle, she tells herself. Her mind churns for a way to word her response; she wishes he could just type everything out on a word document and recite it from there, god, it'd be easier that way.] I don't know if that's a good idea...
no subject
But he has been listening in on the exchange between this Louis and Elle. Elle does not sound entirely comfortable.
More importantly, she does not have a boyfriend.
Corvus, stealthily makes his way off the couch and walks to the other side of the room in a corner that is out of her neighbor's line of sight. He isn't sure what's happening, but it doesn't seem like the neighbor's presence is particularly welcome. So for some reason, he's compelled to project his voice clearly across the room, calling out:]
Is something the matter?

ᴍᴏᴠɪᴇ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs.
It was odd, honestly. Her initial feeling of being flustered when he was near, or when she stared too long at his human face, gave way to a warm sort of fondness; the kind Elle felt when Corvus had laid his head on her lap, those several nights ago. There was still that ache there, lingering long and quiet, but she made the executive decision to not let it hamper her zeal or energy. What was the point of going out and having fun if you were going to spend the entire night overthinking it, after all?
And so it’s later in the night when they go together to see the film. She’s dressed warm (perhaps a bit nicer than usual, though she’d never admit it; tall boots, black jeans, a cream-colored camisole, covered by a warm scarlet cardigan sweater. Her make-up compliments her outfit, and is suited for a nighttime outing as well), and Elle tucks her scarf closer to her as they step back out of the theater. Her long hair falls across her shoulders as she looks over at Corvus, smiling.]
So, as far as scary movies go, that one wasn’t too bad. The monster had a pretty cool design, don't you think?
no subject
Yet he's finding himself spending more and more time as a human around Elle.
At night, he sleeps as a cat. It's more comfortable that way because than the couch fits his size. But during the daylight hours, he's been a man, quietly keeping Elle company, conversing with her everyday, perhaps slowly going through a book in an attempt to keep his mind running.
And here he is, spending time with Elle as if this was what life was always like, what it could be. He's always dressed in dark clothes and he sports his clean shaven face more often than not. His hair is less messy and he walks out of the theater, next to Elle, hands in his pockets, but not as guarded as he usually is. He takes in her energy, her excitement, the amusement she had out of the move they've seen. When she asks him on his opinion, his words are simple as usual.]
It was very alright. Sleek. Very metallic.

Elle is happy, though, to have his company back again, and it's difficult not to notice the subtle changes in his person, as compared to when he first crashed through her balcony window. She keeps these observation mostly to herself, though, and diligently keeps her apartment clean, her companions (Corvus and Leeroy) fed, and her own self content with the situation.
One day, Elle comes back from her part-time job at the ad agency an hour or so later than usual. She enters her flat, tossing her things down a side table next to the door, and looks around.]
I'm home. [She calls out, closing the door behind her. Leeroy meows at Elle from across the living area, curled up in a ball on the floor.] What's everyone been up to?
no subject
Napping. The sunlight was particularly strong today, so Leeroy and I partook in its warmth.
[Wow. He got wordier.]

Ƭιмє тσ Ƒαcє тнє Sтяαηgє
When he isn't reading books or tidying up Elle's apartment or feeding Leeroy, Corvus does continue practicing his transfiguration ability, loosely in secret (basically when Elle is asleep or not looking). Because he lacked the healing factor of second heart, he isn't able to transition as smoothly as he would like. There will always be the lingering sting of forcing his biology to adjust to an addition or subtraction of features, or from the chemical reaction of switching the color of his skin, fur, or feathers.
It's a late afternoon and he's in the living room by himself with Leeroy. Sitting cross legged on the floor, Corvus is holding up his hand to his face, examining it. He's making subtle changes in his finger nails, something that doesn't hurt as much. Long and smooth, or short and blunt? Curved or square? He sets his hand down, brows furrowed in concentration. With immense focus, the hairs on his chin become darker and thicker. It goes from light facial hair to a full on beard in a mere matter of minutes.
He's concentrating so hard, that he's basically lost in thought, unaware that Elle could come out at any time to witness this phenomenon and strangeness that is him.]

Ugh...
[And tired as fuck.
She's frowning because of this, though trying to lift her expression into a somewhat welcoming grin when she sees Corvus already awake and--
And.
What's he doing?]
Cor?
[Changing his beard? What a very surreal thing to see, and it shocks her (not frightens her) to see all of this without warning.]
What're you doing?
