[He's fussing with the items spread out on her bed when he asks that, folding up his DM screen as he reaches over to reclaim a die that had rolled a little too close to the edge of her bedsheets. It's hers--pink and purple--and he tosses it towards Haru in a gentle arc, a smile on his face.]
You finished the first book, right?
[The Fellowship of the Ring. Her Eddie-assigned reading material as he spent time tending to her recover, checking in often, changing her bandages, bringing her food so she didn't have to get up and trudge all the way to the kitchen to fuss for something to eat. It's been close to a week now, and though he's sure she's begun to manage some of it on her own, as far as he's concerned? The less time spent on her legs, the better.
Right now, they're finishing up a quaint little D&D session, tailored to be just one-on-one, something amusing to eat up the hours in an idle day. But he's not going to just up and leave; he likes to make small talk before he's out of her hair completely.]
[ Haru fumbles a little on the catch but succeeds after a half-second, bringing the die safely back down and tucking it just as carefully in the purple pouch she'd bought to store them.
It's been... not negatively strange, but admittedly odd to find herself mostly relegated to bed, except for the times where she would limp to the bathroom. She's feeling a lot better, at least, and Eddie's been incredibly helpful, as bad as she feels about it.
But she smiles up at him now, eyes bright at the mention. ]
Just last night, actually. The part with the mines was very riveting! I had a hard time sleeping by the time I finished, but I remembered you said there were two other books.
[He smiles back, his board folded, and now picking up the handful of miniatures scattered across her bed. Not too many--it's not a particularly complicated session with only one player--but she might as well get the whole experience, he figured. Why hold back when she must be doing everything she can to fend off boredom?]
There sure are. You don't think I'd recommend something that had a huge cliffhanger like that, do you? The Two Towers is next. I've...
[He's accounted for the fact that Haru might have already torn through the first book, and so Eddie reaches down towards his bag near the leg of his chair. He rustles around and pulls back up a book, big and thick.]
[ Haru gives him a look that all but screams he's her lord and savior right now. It's such a thick book. That's guaranteed to at least keep her distracted for hours, and she couldn't be more grateful for it. ]
[He's glad she likes it. He's excited that he might turn someone else into a LotR nerd. He's happy to see her excited for something, to stave off the boredom.]
Who'd have thought this place would still have books and stuff from home? Wonder what Tolkien'd think of his writing making it all the way down to hell...
[Well, anyway, he reaches out to hand her the book.]
You and me both. By making my job easier, giving you things not to be bored about while you wait for your legs to heal.
[He'll save giving her the last book for when she's reached that point; even though that's tucked away in his bag for now. Eddie did not borrow the books, he flat-out bought them. He wants to give them a reread soon, too.]
Oh, hey, that reminds me. Guess what I learned today?
[He waves the idea away as though he could swat it straight out of the air.]
Don't say that. I've been having fun getting to hang out with you more.
[Not that they wouldn't see each other every day, but it's different when he's making sure to take care of her. A one-on-one attention instead of passing each other by on the way out the door.]
But anyway! I learned that in the future, or at least my future, Hollywood made those books into movies. Like, I even asked about it -- they're apparently really good ones, too.
I think I do remember hearing about the movies, but of course I'd never read the books... of course, we absolutely must watch them! Do you think it would be wise to watch them as I finish the books, or perhaps marathon them all at once? I wonder how lengthy they are, of course...
[An infectious excitement when it comes to Lord of the Rings. Eddie compounds on it.]
Apparently they're long. Which is great because that means we can stay up all night marathoning them.
[His grin is wide, because doesn't that just sound like the best option? The one that's the most fun?]
But you definitely gotta read the books first. Then you can really compare and contrast, and there's no way I'm letting you get spoiled on story through the movies.
All right... I'll do my best to make it through the rest of the books in a prompt fashion. I think a movie night sounds like a wonderful idea! I've never been able to do one.
Oh. [Now he feels a little guilty for asking, but at least that makes it easy to promise:] Well... now you do have a friend your age, at least in this hell, and that means there's no getting out of a movie night with Eddie Munson.
...Once you're feeling better, though. All the more reason for you to focus on your recovery
I know, but I get the feeling that you're kind of stubborn, Haru. I feel like you'd push yourself farther and faster than your injury would allow if you had a choice.
[But he says it gently, not really chiding at all.]

...Got it right here.
[Grins wider, waggling the book in his hand.]

Eddie-san, thank you!

I do hope he wouldn't be offended by it... he's done me a very big service.

But what did you learn, Eddie-san?

Don't say that. I've been having fun getting to hang out with you more.

We gotta watch.

[ Eddie, she's holding you to this. ]
So therefore, we must!
no subject
Hell yeah.
[Again, that enthusiasm is infectious. He holds up his hand, flashes the sign of the horns like he were at a concert, then drops it with a laugh.]
Therefore, we must. You've really never had a movie night?
no subject
I didn't have friends my age growing up so while I've been to movie theaters, I never participated in a movie night.

[ With a sigh, but she shakes her head gently. ]
Still. I believe I'll look forward to a movie night with Eddie Munson.

[But he says it gently, not really chiding at all.]
I'll look into buying them for us, then.

[ She. She can't even argue the first part of that, because he's right, she is absolutely "kind of stubborn". ]
no subject
Nah, I don’t think there’s any need for that. I’m not so broke that I can’t afford just… three movies.
[He sure hopes.]
Just focus on finishing the books, okay? We can’t start until you do that.
no subject
Please leave it to me!
[ Listen, she's already going to be digging into this new book the very instant he ditches her. Nothing can stop her now. ]
